Aim: Helping a refugee founded charity give kids in Kenya's largest refugee camp a fair shot at life via the magic of football!!
Who?
My daughter, Ruby, is a highly experienced, dynamic and skilled support and frontline worker, enabling young migrants and refugees who have had grim life experiences, achieve a fulfilling and fantastic life through life skills, practical and mental health support, mentoring and community based activities. Faulu Productions (FP) is an amazing grass roots community organisation, operating in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, located in northwestern Turkana County. Kakuma Camp was established in 1992 to host unaccompanied minors fleeing the war in Sudan and from camps in Ethiopia. You can see more about the camp here. Faulu was founded in Kakuma camp in 2015 by refugee youths from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somali and Sudan. They are officially registered and recognized by the government of Kenya and the United Nations.
Why?
Faulu know the magic of playing football is brilliant for mind, body and community, even in the most difficult circumstances. Their 'Football for Change' programme already engages over 200 refugee boys and girls in structured sports activities that promote peacebuilding, trauma recovery, discipline, and leadership. Many of the programme’s participants come from extremely vulnerable backgrounds, and football provides them with a safe space, a sense of identity, and tools for personal growth. They now want to make it possible for as many of the young girls and boys in the camp as they can; and they want Ruby to come over and help them!
Faulu Productions were badly hit, like many, by Trump's cuts to all USAID programmes, but with help from the global football community we believe we can get this project off the ground and really make a difference.
What?
We're raising £25,000 in total to:
1: buy footballs, cones and kit for the young boys and girls in the camp
2: support the community workers and refugee coaches on the ground; and get more people in the UK knowing all about their work
3: get Ruby on site in Kakuma for a year from this autumn, to share her international experience of ten years working with young migrants and refugees affected by trauma, and support Faulu's young people in using their love of football to strengthen their emotional and physical health!
And we need your help! Thank you!
Thanks to Fualu Productions for the photo!
As we all know, football brings us together, helps us through the most difficult of times, and keeps us healthy. Let's make this happen for the kids of Kakuma Camp! Thank you!
