Help us to raise money to protect care home workers with AerosolShields during the COVID-19 crisis!

We are a group of Seventh-day Adventist Christian students studying at the University of Birmingham. Over the past few weeks we have been greatly saddened to hear of so many health care workers falling sick and even dying after contracting COVID-19 whilst working to save the lives of others and wished that we could do something to help them. We know that there have been problems with sourcing enough adequate PPE for those working with infected patients, which is putting many more lives at risk.

Then we heard about the AerosolShield, which a researcher at our University, Mr Matthew Campbell-Hill, designed and launched for clinical use in just a few days during the COVID-19 pandemic. The AerosolShield is manufactured by the same company that produces medical isolation and decontamination tents used by the NHS, armed forces and humanitarian organisations around the world and can greatly improve safety for doctors, nurses and other staff as they care for patients with COVID-19.

The AerosolShield is a transparent, lightweight, pop-up plastic tent that fits over a patient’s head and shoulders. It forms a barrier that prevents virus-carrying droplets released when a patient coughs from reaching those around them. It can be assembled rapidly, enabling treatment to be given to patients faster, while still ensuring that health workers remain safe.

The AerosolShield therefore:

  • Improves safety for medics in hospitals and care homes working on patients with COVID-19.
  • Improves safety for porters and paramedics moving patients with COVID-19.
  • Reduces the spread of the virus through care facilities and to the families of workers and the community.
  • Could offer a way for families to sit at the bedside of their infected relatives.
  • Provides protection for healthcare staff working without adequate protective equipment (e.g. paramedics, GPs, staff in care homes).

Care homes have particularly suffered from a lack of adequate PPE and the problem there is on-going. It is very important to stop the spread of COVID-19 infection amongst staff and residents in care homes because the chance of dying from COVID-19 infection is highest for the elderly. The AerosolShield would be very helpful in care homes, providing improved safety for staff and the most vulnerable in our community.

Please help us to raise £4200 to supply 100 AerosolShields to care homes across Birmingham
