We designed Adolescent Challenge as a board game to stimulate healthcare professionals, students and trainees to think about the challenges of adolescence and to learn more about adolescent health, so that they provide better care for young people in the future.
Adolescent Challenge started off as an idea on the back of a roll of wallpaper! The initial players (a group of family doctor trainees in Bahrain) were enthusiastic and gave feedback on improving it. Young people from a sixth-form College, and medical students also contributed to the initial development. The game developed iteratively over several years until its current version.
Using funds raised from other activities run by Primed for Practice CIC we were able to produce 50 copies of the game. Nearly 30 of these have now been circulated on a complimentary basis both in the UK and beyond. Feedback has been really positive as teachers and trainers incorporate the game into other curricular activities.
Here are some comments from people who have used it:
- "Really fun game to play"
- "Promoted discussions about why people would feel or do certain things and how we all have same starts"
- "Would be good as an icebreaker on a mental health study day"
- "It has been such a fun, innovative, and engaging experience of teaching and learning."
- "It led to a rich variety of conversations in a short amount of time, that won’t be possible with a standard lecture."
- "Me and my students loved your game!"
Our aim is to produce and circulate more copies of the game to medical schools, nursing schools and other healthcare training schemes. However to do this we need to cover the costs of the initial production and circulation and then raise further funds for more copies to be produced.
So if you want to help motivate healthcare professionals to provide better care for young people both in the UK and worldwide please donate.
