Aim: To bring out a new state of the art adaptive bodysuit design with 3 and a half years of research behind it.
3 and a half years ago I set out on a mission to design a bodysuit for my friend’s little boy, I had little-to-no sewing experience but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. I got to work on a machine that was about 10 years older than me and I made something that kind of resembled a bodysuit- not a very good one, but a bodysuit non the less.
This aside I am also a big brother to a little guy (not so little) 10 year old JB, JB has been diagnosed with ASD( Autism Spectrum Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) as well was hyper mobility, hypersensitivity and is under specialist investigations for other health related issues. He is an absolute champ and doesn’t let anything stop him. JB was non verbal until he was 3 and a half years old and not fully understandable until he was around 5 years old.
After I started to research further into adaptive wear and what was already on the market. I very quickly realised companies use it to gain major profit from putting the prices through the roof and charging an arm and a leg for a product just because they put ‘SEN’ or ‘Disability’ in front of it. That’s when I decided the entire ethos behind my business was going to be affordability for families.
Just Like You Clothing (JLYC) was essentially built overnight because I decided to help friend, in all honesty it was the best choice I ever made. I’ve spoken to and met families who in any other circumstances I would never have had the honour to meet and be acquainted with. These families are all absolutely incredible living their day to day lives facing challenges most of us never even consider possible, their children and young adults are amongst the most resilient, determined and incredible people to be on this earth.
We’ve gained tremendous popularity over the years, building a very loyal and supportive community in the wake of us breaking into the adaptive market. I currently sew everything by hand on a small domestic machine and I love the interactions I have with families.
After spending 3 years doing the most in depth market research around adaptive bodysuits and working with families directly I have designed and developed 3 designs to work across ages from 18-24 months up to 15-16 years hoping to further develop the age range if funding allows.
I’ve found an amazing team out in Pakistan to manufacture the bodysuits on our behalf in a range of sizes and in 6 different colours too! The funds made here will be used to put the initial few orders through our amazing new suppliers!
