The Afghanistan and Central Asian Association is a charity dedicated to empowering and supporting migrants arriving in the UK. One of the methods in which we aim to achieve this is through our mentoring project. Adjusting to a new country and culture is a very difficult transition to make, especially considering that many of the migrants we work with are often seeking asylum from persecution, conflict or oppressive circumstances.
In the UK, refugees are five times more likely to have mental health needs than the general population, and more than 61% will experience severe mental distress. This can be because of both the conditions they have endured in their home countries that led them to flee, and the difficulties that come with arriving in a new country, such as family separation, financial difficulties, cultural differences and discrimination. Our mentoring project provides one-on-one guidance for refugees in order to improve their sense of well-being and improve their confidence. Our mentors, however, provide a range of support, from insight into certain professions to general guidance. Mentees are supported through immigration and asylum issues, mental health, education, employment and counter-radicalisation. The project strives to be a source of all-encompassing support for the service users; both practical guidance and emotional support.
All funds donated to this crowdfunder will be directed towards our mentoring project.
