Set up a local highland dancing competition to keep Scotlands traditional dance form alive and encourage youngsters to get involved

by Natalie in Dunfermline, , United Kingdom

Who we are

Rosyth & District Highland Society are a group of highland dance parents who have set up a committee to start a highland dancing competition in the Rosyth area

Why are we crowdfunding?

Following on from Natalie McLauchlan winning the Dunfermline Press Teacher of the Year at the recent Community Champion Awards she would now like to set up a dance competition in the local area where dancers from all over Scotland can come to compete.  The main reason for this is to provide local dancers and their families from her dance school and others in the area an opportunity to compete and attend an event closer to home while making it easier and cost effective, as well as bringing lots of visitors to the area.

The event is hoped to attract between 150 - 180 dancers with their teachers and families.  It has already received approval from the Royal Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing, which is the World governing body and we are now looking for sponsorship or donations to fund set up costs for our first year, for example medals, trophies, prize money etc.  Trophies can be engraved with your company name or even a memorial trophy in memory of a loved one.  All company names and logos will be included in the event programme and on our Facebook page.

How we’ll spend the money raised

The funds raised will help to cover the costs of the initial set up of what we hope will be an annual event.  The main cost is for trophies, medals etc.  together with the hall rent.  We hope to be able to purchase good quality silver cups which will last for years and will build a history in the dancing world when you look at the winning names engraved on them each year.  We are  not for profit organisation so everything will be used for the benefit of the dancers and the successful event

Community impact

The main reason for this is to provide local dancers and their families from her dance school and others in the area an opportunity to compete and attend an event closer to home while making it easier and cost effective, as well as bringing lots of visitors to the area.

It is hoped 150-180 dancers will attend the event with their families with some staying in local hotels.  Families making a weekend of it and visiting shops, restaurants and attractions in the surrounding areas.

It is also hoped that people who are not involved in highland dancing are welcome to come along and watch the competition and see Scotland's traditional dance form.  If their children (boys or girls) are interested they can come along to a free taster class at Natalie Mclauchlan School of Highland Dancing.  These are based in Rosyth in the Parkgate Community Centre on Monday and Thursday evenings.
