GB Power Hockey Association is the governing body for the exciting disability sport, Power Hockey. It is an contact invasion sport played using specially designed power wheelchairs and a hockey ball.
Power hockey is played predominantly by power wheelchair users, many of whom have life-limiting conditions such as Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and quadreplegic cerebral palsy and as such are unable to play other team contact-based sports.
It is a fun sport that any disabled person can participate in over the age of 8 years old. Besides the fun, Power hockey helps improve the mental and physical health of power wheelchair users and creates a sense of broad community among the players and their families - a group often vulnerable to social isolation.
The money will be spent on the purchase of four Equaliser powersports chairs with power hockey bumpers to allow electric wheelchair users from the Liverpool City Region to play in a new power hockey team and develop their sporting potential and self-confidence .
Each Equaliser 2 powersports chair costs £5,800 to buy and even more to maintain and charge over the course of its lifespan.
