Our story...

Hi! Welcome to our crowdfunding page. We are Hekayah Ltd aiming to facilitate a supportive environment for refugee and migrant women as it is crucial for their recovery and rehabilitation. At Hekayah we provide personalised advice and guidance with their aspirations at their heart, including economic well-being, increased independence, positive mental health and well-being.

Who do we help?

Together, we understand how extremely hard it can be for refugee and migrant women to come to the UK and rebuild their own lives. They arrive in the UK seeking refuge from violence and persecution, only to find that they are met with hostility and a lack of support to help them settle into their new home and become independent.

Therefore, we set up Hekayah in February 2020. A non-for-profit organisation in Birmingham that offers a safe and welcoming space for refugee and migrant women and their children; helps them become more independent and integrated into their communities; and aims to improve their mental and physical health, and ultimately make them independent and more fulfilled.

So far, since our foundation, we’ve provided emotional, practical and social support to approximately over 100 women and their families. Now we are ready to move on to the next step and offer a wider range of services that will help develop skills and knowledge, encourage women and families to support each other, and open our community’s eyes to a world of possibilities and what’s available in their local area.

What do we do?

To ensure we provide the right services for the people we support, we regularly speak to women and children about their specific needs and what services would help them the most. We run:

A reading club called A New Chapter, which aims to develop English language skills, establish friendships, and help women access potentially life-changing services, activities and people.

A job club which helps women aged over 18 to understand the job market, find suitable roles to apply for, write effective CVs and covering letters, and prepare for interviews.

Volunteer opportunities with Hekayah to help women gain valuable work experience, improve their job prospects and support people from their local community.

Arts and crafts sessions and field trips to local places of interest such as museums. These activities could significantly improve the mental health of local women who rarely leave their home or may not know about all the wonderful opportunities available to them in Birmingham.

IT workshops that aim to improve the computer and technology skills and knowledge of local women, which could open a world of opportunities.

Why should you support us?

The main change we are working towards is to get more refugee and migrant women out of their homes and connect with each other. This is the foundation from which we can improve mental and physical health, establish peer support that prevents isolation, and open eyes to new possibilities.

On top of this, we want to give women of all ages the confidence, skills and knowledge to secure employment for the first time or a more fulfilling role than their current job. A change that will empower women, boost financial independence and have a positive impact on their families and communities.

Finally, by improving literacy, numeracy and IT skills, and presenting to the women, services and activities available to them in their local area, we’ll be able to help them confidently explore and make the most of what’s available to them outside of their homes and online.

However, to do all this and improve many more lives, we need financial support from you.

So, we kindly ask you to become part of our journey, and more importantly the journey of refugee, migrant women and their children in Birmingham.

Together, we can help refugee and migrant women and children reach their full potential and flourish in the UK.
