To empower 40 vulnerable Orthodox Jewish families in Salford with food security and holistic well-being.

by Mark Yodaiken in Salford, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

KOLLEL GAON YAAKOV (Charity No. 1145554) supports 40 families in the Salford area.

Our users, deeply rooted in the Orthodox Jewish community, struggle with:

  • Food Insecurity:
Consistent access to culturally appropriate and affordable food is a significant challenge, particularly as they are unable to access mainstream provisions due to the requirement for Kosher food.
  • Limited Access to Resources:
Mainstream services and information are often inaccessible due to cultural barriers and limited internet usage.
  • Cultural Sensitivity Barriers:
Cultural sensitivities create obstacles to seeking and receiving necessary support.
  • Holistic Well-being Challenges:
Maintaining physical and mental health is difficult due to stress, limited resources, and lack of accessible support.
  • Family Dynamic Strain:
Intricate family dynamics and external pressures contribute to relational tensions and stress within households.

We will run:
Weekly, two-hour workshops focused on healthy eating and living. These sessions will provide practical, budget-friendly meal preparation techniques, nutrition education, and guidance on incorporating exercise into daily routines. Furthermore, we will address the complexities of family and work dynamics, equipping participants with tools to strengthen relationships and effectively manage stress.

To provide weekly, comprehensive food packages tailored to meet the unique dietary needs of our community. These packages will contain essential pantry staples such as tinned vegetables, potatoes, and pasta, as well as fresh and frozen goods, crucial toiletries, nappies, baby milk, and sanitary products. As a form of short-term support, each family will receive 12 such packages to assist them in regaining their stability and getting back on their feet. This ensures consistent and culturally appropriate sustenance for our vulnerable families, directly alleviating food insecurity and promoting overall well-being during a challenging period.

 Project Benefits:

This project will directly address food insecurity, improve nutritional health, and enhance family well-being within the Orthodox Jewish community of Salford. Participants will gain practical skills in budget-friendly meal preparation and exercise, fostering healthier lifestyles. Workshops will also strengthen family relationships and stress management. Consistent, culturally appropriate food packages will ensure reliable access to essential sustenance, alleviating financial strain and promoting overall well-being. By empowering families with knowledge and resources, we aim to build a more resilient and thriving community.

 Project Integration and Rationale:

  • Complementary Activities: The workshops and food packages are seamlessly integrated. The workshops provide practical instruction on utilizing the food provided in the packages, thereby promoting sustainable healthy eating habits.
  • Holistic Approach: The project adopts a holistic approach to well-being, addressing physical health through nutrition and exercise, mental health through stress management, and social well-being through strengthened family relationships.
  • Addressing Root Issues: By combining the provision of essential food supplies with educational workshops, the project addresses both the immediate need for sustenance and the long-term goal of fostering sustainable healthy living practices.
  • Culturally Sensitive: The food packages are meticulously tailored to meet the specific dietary requirements of the Orthodox Jewish community, and the workshops are designed to address the unique challenges faced by these families, ensuring cultural relevance and sensitivity.
  • Empowerment: The project's overarching goal is to empower families with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to achieve self-sufficiency and build resilience, thereby fostering a stronger and more thriving community.

We invite individuals and organizations to sponsor a family through the provision of 12 weeks of essential, short-term food packages.
A sponsorship of £576 (£48 per package x 12 packages) will directly support a vulnerable family in Salford 7, enabling them to regain stability and get back on their feet.
