At Citizens Advice North Herts, we have been a cornerstone of the North Herts community for over 85 years. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to provide advice that changes lives. We're here to support individuals in their times of need and we aim to prevent crises by offering early intervention, empowering people with the confidence and skills to face their challenges.
Our community is still facing persistent issues. Many individuals are trapped in a cycle of negative budgets and poverty, unsure of how to break free. That's where we step in, delivering advice and support that makes a tangible difference. Our ultimate goal is to help people become self-reliant, equipping them with the tools they need to manage their finances and regain control of their lives.
We know that budgeting isn't easy for everyone, and sometimes even the best efforts aren’t enough when faced with rising rents, food prices, and living costs. Our dedicated Advice team works tirelessly to support individuals and families, helping them find a way forward.
Every pound raised will directly support individuals in North Herts struggling with financial hardship. Together, we can help break the cycle of poverty and create meaningful, lasting change.
Sarah struggled to manage her finances after she lost her job
Sarah, a single mother of two, was struggling to make ends meet after losing her job. She found herself overwhelmed with bills and debts, unsure of how to manage. With CANH’s support, Sarah learned how to budget effectively, received advice on debt management, and accessed local services for additional support. Within months, Sarah regained control of her finances and is now working part-time while caring for her children.
"I was at my lowest point when I contacted CANH. I didn’t know where to turn, but they listened and helped me take the first steps towards a better future. I’m finally feeling hopeful again."
Noah feared he would lose his home
Noah had been living on a limited income for years, but the rising cost of living pushed him into financial crisis. His rent arrears were mounting, and he feared eviction. Our team stepped in, offering practical advice on budgeting and negotiating with his landlord. Today, Noah has a manageable payment plan in place and feels confident handling his finances.
"I was embarrassed to ask for help, but CANH made me feel supported and respected. They helped me keep my home, and now I’m in a much better place."
Rita was struggling to pay her energy bills
Rita, an elderly pensioner, was struggling to keep up with increased energy bills. Her limited income left her choosing between heating and eating. Our Advice team helped her apply for grants, manage her energy usage, and find other support services. Now, Rita no longer worries about her bills and is able to live comfortably.
"The team at CANH were wonderful. They helped me find solutions I didn’t even know existed. I can finally afford to heat my home and have peace of mind."
We helped Raj apply for disability benefits
Raj faced financial hardship when his Universal Credit wasn’t enough to cover his rent, leaving him with mounting debts and relying on the Food Bank. When he approached Citizens Advice North Herts, we helped him apply for Personal Independence Payment for his health issues. We also supported his appeal for Limited Capability for Work-Related Activity.
With this extra income, Raj paid off his debts and no longer relies on the Food Bank.
"Thanks to Citizens Advice North Herts, I can finally breathe again and focus on my health without the constant worry of debt."
Here’s how your generous contributions will be used:
Expanding Our Advice Team: To meet the growing demand, we plan to expand our Advice team by recruiting and training more volunteer advisors. This will allow us to offer support to more individuals and families who are struggling with financial difficulties. The additional staff will help reduce waiting times, so that no one is left without the guidance they need in a time of crisis.
£25 could fund a 30 minute advice appointment.
£100 could help fund a one-hour appointment with an expert debt adviser.
£200 will pay for a specialist adviser to help a client apply for a disability benefit
Delivering our Financial Literacy Programmes: We will use the funds to expand the delivery of workshops and resources focused on financial literacy. These programmes teach essential skills like budgeting, debt management, and saving strategies, empowering people to take control of their finances and avoid future crises. We believe that prevention is key, and these educational efforts will help more people become financially self-sufficient.
£125 could help us run an outreach session and offer up to 5 clients a budgeting skills workshop.
Increasing Outreach and Awareness: We aim to raise awareness about our services so that no one in our community has to suffer in silence. With the funds, we’ll increase our outreach efforts by creating campaigns and partnering with local organisations to reach people who may not yet know that help is available.
£250 could deliver a cost-of-living support workshop in the community
£300 could enable us to hold an open door session in a local community centre
