Who are we?

Burgess Sports is dedicated to creating a transformative impact in underserved communities, especially around the Aylesbury Estate. Our vision focuses on improving the everyday lives of underprivileged families through comprehensive interventions.

Our mission is multifaceted, aimed at inspiring children, developing young leaders, supporting families, and fostering community connections. We offer engaging sports camps and after-school clubs to enhance children's academic, social, and physical skills, providing joy and camaraderie. Our ambassador programme equips young leaders with skills to become community change-makers, creating a ripple effect of positive influence.

We firmly support families by offering resources like family activities and parenting workshops to strengthen bonds and empower caregivers. Our initiatives, such as the Clubhouse Café and Kids in the Kitchen, foster community interaction and collaboration, breaking down barriers and building connections across diverse backgrounds.

In the face of high levels of deprivation and the ongoing regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate, our work is urgent and essential. We address the unique needs of our community, providing consistent support and guidance as families navigate complex transitions. Burgess Sports catalyses change and is a beacon of hope by tackling the root causes of inequality and fostering resilience and empowerment.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We are crowdfunding to further our mission and vision of transforming underserved communities around the Aylesbury Estate.  With your support, we can continue providing these enriching experiences, addressing high levels of deprivation, and fostering resilience. Crowdfunding will enable us to sustain our programmes, offer more resources, and contribute to poverty alleviation by supporting working parents while ensuring their children are safe and engaged. Together, we can create a brighter, more equitable future for all.

Community impact

In January 2023, an impact assessment using the Housing Associations Charitable Trust (HACT) tool revealed that our activities generated £2,263,755 in social value, with a return of £10.25 for every £1 invested.

With over a thousand attendees a year, our organisation evaluates and monitors the projects through both quantitative and qualitative methods:

Attendance and Participation Records: We track attendance and participation, noting the number of attendees.

We receive referrals from Surrey Square, Michael Faraday and Southwark Council. This ensures that we include the children that will benefit most from our work.

Surveys and Feedback: Regular surveys will gather participant's opinions and suggestions, helping us to understand the programme's impact and identify areas for improvement.

Previous Programme Feedback:

For example Skill Development: 58% of parents strongly agree and 42% agree that their child has gained new skills and confidence.

Exposure to New Foods: 86.7% strongly agree and 13.3% agree that the programme introduced their family to new ingredients.

Community Engagement: 93% of respondents have attended the Wednesday lunch.

Additionally, we do case studies to show the impact our initiatives make, https://www.burgesssports.org/case-studies/

Poverty Alleviation: By providing childcare and meals, our camps help parents work additional hours and reduce holiday expenses. Our nutrition quality is recognized by the Food for Life Award from the Soil Association, and we offer healthy cooking workshops for children. Employing five Ambassadors, we paid £22,000 in wages in 2023, which will rise to nine employees in 2024 as four girls have completed their level 2 qualification training.

Overall, our initiatives foster a sense of belonging and empowerment, contributing to a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community. Children return to school happier and more motivated to learn. We are one of four Soil Association Bronze Award Food for Life organizations in Southwark, and our café is one only of 19 hospitality businesses in London paying the London Living Wage. Food Standard Agency 5-star hygiene rating. Recently we received a Carbon Literacy Certificate
