Aim: To raise Awareness of two incredible charities that provide support for any one effected by cancer.
So, a few of you have noticed Uncle Chris, Sophia and I have been going on some extra long adventures lately... It's not because we are completely crazy...
We have been training for a 50km ultra walking event at the beginning of August and to make it even harder, both Uncle Chris and I have signed up to run Truro half marathon in September too. This is all to raise awareness and money for 5KYW (Plymouth) and the Mustard Tree (at University Hospital Trust Plymouth).
At 5kyw, we have become a support network for anyone effected by cancer. We are a community of likeminded people, who know life can be challenging and tough, but we chose to find the positive in life and bring out the best in each other! We are all nervous and excited. I never imagined I would even attempt these challenges. Uncle Chris has never run more than 10k before and neither of us have ever walked any distance near 32 miles in one day. Sophia has completed both challenges previously but that doesn't mean it gets any easier.
Wherever we go, we wear one of my 5kyw tops! Why? Because it spreads awareness of what exercise and community can do to help anyone effected by cancer. The evidence is forever growing, proving that exercise can improve people's outcomes with cancer. Recent studies have proven that one hours exercise a week (that's a park run/ walk) can improve people's tolerance to the treatments, which can lead to enhancing outcomes. Exercising with a cancer diagnosis has been proven to reduce the risk of people dying with cancer by a third as it contributes to reducing recurrence (the cancer coming back) or a new cancer developing. Why? Because exercise boosts your immune system, regulates hormone levels, and reduces inflammation. Of course there are multiple other factors too.
Another charity that is like home for people effected by cancer is the Mustard Tree. As many of you know I am a Bowel Cancer Nurse, and Sophia is a HPB Specialist Dietician, there are multiple times that we both advise people to utilise the Mustard Tree, for all sorts of different reasons. I often meet people outside of my specialty, it always starts with would you like a brew, or oo doggy, can I say hello.
Of course there will be a cake sale too. Date to be announced yet. So, any keen bakers out there please let us know
