Help an LGBT refugee settle in the Maritimes

raised so far

We're raising CDN$6500 for resettlement costs for an LGBT refugee under the Atlantic Immigration Pilot

by LGBTQ2S+ Refugee in New Brunswick, Canada

*** Update 25 June 2021 ***

We're able to reduce our fundraising target by more than half, thanks to an amazing and generous offer of work in the Maritimes!

We're a group of residents in south-eastern New Brunswick (Saint John-Moncton-Sackville NB area) who are trying to help an LGBT refugee get out of their country and come resettle in the Maritimes.

They are in a Middle Eastern country where they are currently in hiding. Their family has given permission for a local militia to kill the person should they find them.

The recent murder of a Gay man in the region shows how dangerous it is for an LGBT person to even attempt to leave their country in order to claim UNHCR refugee status:

The Canadian government has said they are committed to helping LGBTQ2S+ people:

We were initially thinking we'd need to raise the full $16,500 for private community sponsorship. But the offer of a job in the Maritimes changes everything.

We now need just to raise the $3,500 that IRCC require under the Atlantic Immigration Pilot programme for a work permit holder to show that they have in cash. In addition, our LGBT friend will need around the same amount again to cover travel, accommodation on arrival, and visa fee costs.

Thank you for your support! Let's bring this to a happy conclusion and get a refugee safely on their way to start a new life in Canada!
