The 33rd Norwich Scouts currently runs three ages groups (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts) and provides space for community groups at what was an almost derelict Scout site at Jessopp Road which we took over in 2007. Also many different community groups use our facilities.
With over 1,600 hours (c. 200 person days) of adult volunteer help, we have refurbished the two small existing buildings at Jessopp Road, from the 1950s. However, these are old, small and don’t have the right facilities for a modern community hub
We are planning to build a new environmentally friendly, high thermal performing well-ventilated building and that has a 3m wide space around two sides of the building to allow for outside even in inclement weather. Based on a log cabin design, it will be a building unlike any in Norwich and be a flagship project catering for younger and older people and be the centrepiece of the community.
This new Scouting and Community hub will not only avoid the loss of current scout and community activities, but also provide opportunity to expand Scouting activities along with a broader range of community services, similar to a village hall in the heart of Norwich.
The community groups that currently interact with us come from a wide range of civil society and includes a breast feeding group, three toddler groups (messy play, a music group and a Phonics group), a Personal Trainer, an after school club, 2 Forest Schools groups, an art group.
The Scouts own the Jessopp Road site, has obtained full planning consent for the new hall and already raised £40,000. When quotes were a year ago, we had a total budget of £400k. This Jessopp Road Scout and Community hub is an oven ready project that can be rapidly delivered once funded.
