Aim: A Culturally co-designed activities eg storytelling, cooking, dance, will reduce social isolation, impr mental wellbeing, strong comm cohesion

The Pain Bowl Relief Foundation is launching a transformative 24-month initiative aimed at supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the Cameroonian diaspora in London. This project will focus on co-creating cultural activities that address trauma, mental health, and social isolation caused by the ongoing crisis in Cameroon. We will offer a series of culturally tailored activities such as trauma-informed counseling, talking therapies, storytelling, cultural cooking workshops, traditional dance, and drama workshops to empower and heal members of the Cameroonian community.

Target Group and Expected Impact
The primary beneficiaries will be the Cameroonian diaspora, particularly the 5,000 individuals living in London, many of whom are dealing with the psychological impact of the current crisis in Cameroon. By engaging in culturally resonant activities, participants will benefit from reduced isolation, improved mental health, and enhanced social cohesion within the community. These activities will provide a therapeutic outlet for emotional expression, while fostering a sense of shared understanding and support.

Project Duration and Breakdown of Activities

Month 1-3: Preparation and Community Engagement

  • Community Consultation & Co-Creation: During the initial three months, we will conduct focus groups and distribute questionnaires to gather input from community members on the types of activities they would most benefit from (e.g., therapeutic talking therapies, cooking workshops, dance, storytelling). This feedback will shape the direction of the project and ensure that the activities are tailored to the community's needs.
  • Partnership Building & Outreach: We will work with local African community groups, the Cameroon High Commission, and Cameroonian Solidarity UK (CAS-UK) to ensure widespread outreach. This phase will also involve building relationships with venues and securing locations for upcoming activities.

Month 4-6: Launch and Initial Activities

  • Cultural Cooking Workshops: Monthly workshops where participants learn to cook traditional Cameroonian dishes. After each cooking session, there will be a showcase event where participants can present and share their culinary creations with the community, fostering pride in their heritage and celebrating culture through food.
  • Therapeutic Talking Sessions: Monthly group therapy sessions led by qualified counselors, focusing on trauma-informed care and emotional support.
  • Traditional Dance Workshops: Dance is an important part of Cameroonian culture. Monthly dance workshops will teach traditional Cameroonian dances, helping participants reconnect with their cultural roots while improving physical and emotional wellbeing.

Month 7-12: Expansion and Deepening Engagement

  • Drama and Performing Arts Workshops: Monthly drama workshops designed to help participants express emotions and process trauma through theater and performance. These activities will also provide an opportunity for social bonding and community building.
  • Focus Group and Feedback Sessions: These will take place every three months to gauge the effectiveness of the activities, gather feedback, and refine the program based on the community's needs.
  • Peer Support Circles: Development of peer-led support groups, providing participants with ongoing emotional support from one another.

Month 13-18: Consolidation and Skill Development

  • Cultural Integration & Health Workshops: Sessions aimed at integrating Cameroonian culture with aspects of mental health care, such as mindfulness, stress management, and trauma healing through cultural practices.
  • Health & Wellbeing Events: We will host community events focused on holistic wellbeing, combining physical and mental health elements such as yoga, African dance, and trauma-informed care discussions.
  • Evaluation and Adjustment: Ongoing collection of feedback through surveys and focus groups, ensuring continuous learning and adaptation of the activities.

Month 19-24: Final Evaluation and Community Showcase

  • Showcase Event: At the end of the project, participants will present what they've learned and created through a community showcase, such as a dance performance, cooking demonstration, or storytelling event. This will also serve as a celebration of their achievements.
  • Final Impact Assessment: A thorough evaluation will be conducted, using pre- and post-activity questionnaires to assess the impact of the project on participants' mental health, social isolation, and overall wellbeing.
  • Sustainability Plan: The final months will include planning for the continuation of the project. Based on feedback and findings, we will explore opportunities for longer-term support or integration into existing community services.
