Who are we?
Barra Organics is fast approaching 10 years on Sharrow Vale Road, and to mark this milestone, we’re planning some big, fresh moves. What started as a small, family-run market stall selling organic fruit and veg has blossomed into a beloved specialist organic shop, but we’ve outgrown our traditional family business model.''years and beyond!'
Now, we’re ready for the next step: becoming a Workers Co-Operative.
Why a Workers Co-operative?
As a worker co-op we aim to build on this, safeguard it for the future, deliver even better services and great value for money for our loyal customers including expanding our veg box scheme. We wish to strengthen our connections with local food producers and reduce our carbon footprint. With your help we will be here for the next 10
We believe a Workers Co-Operative structure truly reflects our ethos. It supports our commitment to fairness, sustainability, and community-driven growth, while providing a stronger, more resilient framework for the future.
The last few years have thrown plenty of challenges our way, from COVID-19 , the cost of living price rises to the tough growing conditions of 2024, which have affected our organic suppliers.Despite this, we’ve kept pushing forward—our organic vegetable box scheme now reaches homes across Sheffield and South Yorkshire. But we know there’s more we can do, and a Workers Co-Operative model will help us get there.
Why this Change Matters:
Empowering Our Team:
Becoming a Workers Co-Operative means giving our workers a voice in the business. It creates a sense of ownership, helping us attract and retain passionate, creative individuals who drive us forward.
Supporting Local Restaurants and Craftspeople:
We work closely with local chefs, craftspeople and food artisans, supplying them with the quality ingredients they need to create something special. A Workers Co Operative model strengthens these ties and enriches Sheffield’s vibrant culinary scene.
Stronger Connections with Organic Growers:
By building closer ties with local organic farmers and trusted wholesalers, we can offer a consistent supply of the freshest produce, while supporting fair and stable prices.
Growing with the Community:
Sharrow Vale Road is more than just our location—it’s our adopted home. By strengthening local partnerships and encouraging collaboration, we’ll foster a more supportive environment for everyone.
Managing Risks Together:
As a Workers Co-Operative, we share the risks of market fluctuations, which helps us keep prices fair and our shelves stocked.
Exploring New Opportunities:
As a Workers Co-Operative, we’ll potentially have access to community loan stock funding that can support our goals for sustainable outreach and growth, helping us futher invest in education, research, and development.
Expanding the Business:
Becoming a Workers Co-Operative sets the stage for future growth—expanding our vegetable box scheme and bringing new potential cooperative members on board.
Commitment to Sustainability:
Working together allows us to further our sustainability initiatives and inspire our community to embrace organic food and eco-friendly practices.
Why We Need Your Support
Converting to a Workers Co-Operative brings many long-term benefits, but there are upfront costs we need help with. While we’re receiving some support through Co-operatives UK, we need to cover accountancy and legal fees, rebranding (signage, website updates, marketing), and pay someone outside of the shop opening hours to lead the transition.
Your contributions will allow us to navigate this exciting shift while continuing to serve the community with the best quality organic food we’re known for.
