On the 27th August, 2017, a post on a very popular anonymous submission Facebook page (OxLove) was submitted, thanking a " homeless man in ChCh meadow who cheers runners on". The post ends with the person saying "I know you'll never see this, but it really did help me". This post received 350+ likes, and over 150 comments, with students tagging their friends and sharing fond stories and memories of conversations and moments they have experienced with people from the homeless community of Oxford.
In October 2016, two of Oxford's main homeless shelters were faced with news of their future closure. Simon House, located on Paradise Street in Oxford, and Julian Housing, based in Oxford and Abingdon, will be ‘decomissioned’ by April 2018 (the end of Hilary Term). This follows the Government’s £1.5 million cut to homelessness provisions across the county. These changes will force more people into Oxford's remaining shelters, which will then result in less provided support, time and food per person.
If each person that liked, or commented on this popular Facebook Post (#Oxlove4373) donated even 50p or £1, the money raised would make a real difference to the Oxford based homeless charities such as Gatehouse Shetler and OxHoP. The money raised on this crowdfunder page will be divided between the two charities, and hopefully bring attention to our city's ever growing problem.
