For many years the village of Owston Ferry in North Lincolnshire has been lit up at Christmas and a Christmas Tree adorns the Market Place. This starts with the switch on night, when the village gathers in the market place waiting for Santa who arrives in a horse drawn sledge. This event brings out the whole community, young and old, and is a highlight of village life. Carols are sung before the countdown to switch on, Santa then speaks to all the children who receive a bar of chocolate as a treat and if they bring a letter for Santa he will reply! The lights are on the houses and the tree is lit up from the beginning of December until 12th night in January.
A small committee of villagers organise the tree and lights. We fundraise as much as we can with coffee mornings, collections and raffles. However, the annual costs are a lot for a small committee to raise and this is the first year we have tried crowdfunding. We need money for insurance, electricity and a tree.
