We are raising money for local groups Music Yard Larne, Whitehead Orchestra and Island Voices Community Choir to support local music making

by Kevin Murphy in Larne, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

All across Mid and East Antrim people have been making new music and art together as part of the Opening Doors Project. It has been the most wonderful journey of discovery about the cultural life of Larne, Carrick and Ballymena which has uncovered lots of stories, creative citizens and performing groups who are now coming together to perform for the first time. The final Opening Doors performance on 9th March brings the project to a close but very much feels like the beginning of something much bigger and we are raising money to support local groups Music Yard Larne, Whitehead Orchestra and Island Voices Community Choir to continue to support local music making.

Both Whitehead Orchestra and Island Voices are relatively newly formed groups and Music Yard Larne has been at the centre of young music making in Larne for some time. All of them involve significant amounts of civic and voluntary action. What they bring to the area is opportunity for people of all ages to get involved in music, to make new friends, to learn new skills and to build lasting social bonds.

I'm part of the creative team and partnership which has helped make the Opening Doors Project happen. The partnership involves Voluntary Arts Ireland and Wall2Wall Music with the support of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Check out some of the new music made by young people from Larne as part of the project

We believe that Whitehead Orchestra, Island Voices and Music Yard Larne not only deserve recognition for the work that they do but an investment from local people to help them continue to bring music to the area. All funds raised will go directly to the groups and will be split equally between them. This will enable them to pay for essential equipment, contribute to running expenses and crucially put on more performances and activities that benefit people from Larne, Carrick and Ballymena.

All donations received by Thursday 28th February will be listed in the official concert programme for the performance on 9th March (unless otherwise instructed).
