Who are Granite City Roller Derby?
Granite City Roller Derby are Aberdeen's original roller derby league and one of the oldest leagues in the UK. As founding members of the roller derby community in Scotland, GCRD have been pivotal in giving one of the UK's fastest growing sports a home and promoting the success of roller derby all over the country.
What is Roller Derby?
Roller Derby is a fast-paced, full contact team sport that requires agility, strength, determination and strategy. It is played on an oval track on quad roller skates and requirescontinual offence and defence in a series of 2-minute long 'jams'.
Who are the Northern Fights?
The Northern Fights are GCRD's competitive travel team, playing under the Women's Flat Track Roller Derby (WFTDA) rules in the British Roller Derby Championships.
They have gone from strength to strength, fighting for their place in British roller derby and carving a name for themselves as as the most formidable team in the North of Scotland.
2018 represents their fifth season as part of the British Roller Derby Championships and they have excelled in their group this year, fighting back from team changes and injuries to finish second in their group, Tier 3 Regional North.
This has secured them a place at the 2018 playoffs with an opportunity to fight a last battle to the end with the ultimate prize of promotion to Tier 2!
The team have worked extremely hard to get to this point, but as the most northerly competing team in the tournament the cost of attending away games and hosting home games has been crippling for the club.
The playoffs is a milestone opportunity for the team and they are offering top rewards for anyone able to donate to the cause!
Playoffs tournament 2018 will be held in Stoke-on-Trent on the 16th & 17th September but we will be fundraising until the end of the year to offset the costs as much as possible.
Let's get our Fights to the Playoffs and show them what we're made of!
