I suppose at heart I've always been somewhat of a socialist with entrepreneurial tendencies. I've also been an avid professional wrestling 'lover' since the mid 1980s. Admittedly a lot of my early payperview experiences were via VHS cassette released here in the UK approximately a year or so after the actual events. However it did mean that I got to watch Wrestlemania 1 to 7, Royal Rumble 88 - 91, Summerslam 88 - 91, 1st to 4th Survivor Series and The Battle Royal at the Royal Albert Hall event.
It wasn't until eventually cajoling my recently promoted and hard working Father to purchase a Sky Movies subscription that I was able to watch an event LIVE as it happened. That was the 5th Annual Survivor Series from the Joe Louis arena in Detroit.
I'd also begun watching WWF Superstars so had been enticed by the build up to the event and the mechanics of it.
It wasn't at all clear to me in the beginning that this was physical performance art rather than competition combat or sport, this was largely due to some great television with 'Macho Man' Randy Savage being bitten graphically by Jake 'The Snake' Roberts supposedly 'de-venomised' pet Snake Damien.
I was hooked right from the start. Having wrestlers like 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper, 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair, 'Million Dollar Man' Ted Dibiase, Bret 'Hitman' Hart and the 'British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith, and managers like the 'Mouth of the South' Jimmy Hart and 'Sensational' Sherri involved in the opening traditional Survivor Series single elimination match completely solidified my early love, and made me glad I had a collection of tapes to watch over and over again as my obsession grew arms and legs.
One of the things that has always frustrated me is the lack of opportunity for lifelong fans to grow and develop their passion into something bigger and something better..
