Since Newquay Community Orchard’s first Crowdfunder launched in January 2015, the site and project has been growing at a rapid pace. The first year alone saw 200 volunteers sign up, donating 6100 hours of their time. There has also been regular engagement with a large amount of the local community through 40 workshops and community events, and we provided educational services to 440 school children. We have even found the time to plant almost 1000 woodland and native fruit trees.
The aim of the project is to promote a healthy, social, environmentally friendly local community, and the 7 acre site itself is fast becoming a central hub for volunteering, educating, training and socialising.
After a successful first Crowdfunder Newquay Community Orchard is now looking for funds to develop a wooded area of site into a Woodland Classroom (The Den) and Workshop area. We feel this is the next important step as this will provide us with a safe and secure outdoor space, which can be used in all weathers.
In a world dominated by social media and smartphones, we are encouraging those of all ages to get back to nature. "The Den" will provide us with a space to carry out regular educational workshops and events. We are teaming up with Newquay Forest School to run daily, onsite classes, which will inspire the next generation to make important lifestyle choices. The area will also be used to run regular outdoor events for the local community, such as outdoor cinema, educational workshops and music events.
Wood is a natural, renewable resource, but there is currently unprecedented levels of deforestation happening worldwide. Here at Newquay Community Orchard we are looking at ways to re-use wood destined for land fill. We accept donations of all types of wood, and the construction of a Wood Workshop area will provide us with a safe, secure and dry area for our volunteers to work. This area will also play a pivotal role in the future development of the Orchard and its volunteers - allowing us to offer volunteers the chance to carry out woodworking sessions, whilst also allowing for the effective and efficient use of donations and our time.
How can you help?
Crowdfunding is important to us as it gives us the ability to develop our site, whilst also developing those involved. The money raised will allow us to fund the construction of our on-site Woodland Education area and Woodland Workshop. These advancements will aid with the future progression of the orchard, and it will provide us with safe, secure and dry areas for the children and volunteers to learn, work and play.
Apart from funding we are always looking for donations. If you have something sat at the bottom of the garden that you may think could be of some use to us then please get in touch. We have accepted a wide range of garden and maintenance tools, as well as a variety of wood products. Even the sheds and greenhouses visible on site were donated by the local community.
Most importantly, and what makes the community orchard project possible, is the donation of peoples time. We have a range of dedicated volunteers involved with the orchard site, from retired builders to youngsters wanting to learn, and we are always looking for more. If you have skills in carpentry, building or plumbing, if you are an artist wanting to show off your talents, or if you just want to get your hands mucky, whilst learning new skills and meeting new people, please get in touch. There may even be a cup of tea and a biscuit waiting for you!
