New Londoners is a youth group for refugees, but without more funding it will have to close. We need £9,000 to keep running this year

New Londoners is a thriving youth group supported by The Children's Society with more and more young refugees and asylum seekers receiving support each week. But without more funding it will have to close, leaving these vulnerable young people with little support.

We need £9,000 to keep our doors open for the next 12 months.

“For young refugees like us, who are here in a new country without our friends or family, the group helps us make new friends"

What we're doing

For many young refugees, navigating systems in a new country and in a different language can be isolating. Being able to meet other young people who are going through the same things, and who understand them, can make things feel so much better.

New Londoners is a youth activity group supported by The Children's Society for young asylum seekers and refugees in the London area. Every fortnight we meet to improve young people’s wellbeing and reduce isolation.

“The group is important because there's a lot of children like us who need help. When we feel alone, the group volunteers are there to take care of us"

Together, we talk about issues that young people are facing – from problems sleeping, to worrying about safety, to budgeting – and help them to find solutions to their problems and build their resilience. The group is also a space to have fun, relax, gain skills, and make new friends.

Over 50 young people have accessed the New Londoners youth group since it started, and many of them have told us how important it has been for them. Young people who have been attending for a while also have the opportunity to participate more actively and get training to become youth mentors who decide on the programme of activities and discussions, and welcome new people into the group.

Over the last year, the New Londoners youth group has been growing and new young people are joining each week. By attending, young people have built strong and lasting relationships and are able to discuss issues they’re having and give one another support in a safe and relaxed environment. It really is a space for their voices to be heard.

We need your help

We need to raise £9,000 to keep the New Londoners youth group running for another 12 months. Without more funding, the group will have to close. Your donation will mean young people arriving in the UK alone can have a safe space, get support from specialist staff and volunteers, make friends and have fun!

All the money raised will go towards running the group and social activities. This includes travel for young people so that the group is accessible, food, activity supplies, and some staff time.

“The group has helped me a lot to build my confidence. When I arrived in London I was very depressed, but by coming to the group and meeting new friends...the support the group gives me is very helpful”

Who we are

Right now in Britain there are children and young people who feel scared, unloved and unable to cope. The Children’s Society works with these young people, step by step, for as long as it takes.

We listen. We support. We act.

There are no simple answers so we work with others to tackle complex problems. Only together can we make a difference to the lives of children now and in the future.

Because no child should feel alone.
