A photo documentary on the impact and progress of aid agencies following the earthquake in Nepal. The objective of the documentary is to maintain awareness of the ongoing challanges for Nepal in recovering from the earthquakes and also to bring focus on the work of aid agencies in response to natural disasters. This will be achieved through a photo essay, photo book and exhibitions.
In April 2015 the country of Nepal was hit by a number of earthquakes. Much of the infrastructure of the capital Kathmandu was destroyed including many buildings of historic and cultural importance. Rural communities were destroyed. 8,617 people were killed. 16,808 injured. 2.8 million people displaced. 473,000 houses destroyed. $88.2 million has been received in funds to mount a relief effort.
After a career and lifestyle change in 2011 in order to follow my passion for photography I studied at the University of Westminster as a mature student. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Hons Photography with First Class Honours this year. In 2013 my first documentary project Twenty Days Later was about the aftermath of the Rana Plaza Building Collapse in Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The resulting short film was adopted by the Bangladesh Accord in their work to improve the garment industry in Bangladesh. The film, a book and exhibitions helped raise awareness about the situation in Bangladesh's garment industry. Now qualified I am embarking on my first project as a documentary photographer.
Building on my experience from that first documentary I wish to investigate the progress and impact of various aid agencies efforts in supporting the Nepalese people following the earthquakes of April 2015. I am particularly interested in the situation six months down the line when the news media circus has moved on. What was the impact of the donations to charity made at the time? What is the plight of the bereaved and survivors? What has been achieved and what is there still to do? I will answer these questions visually using my skills and experience as a photographer. Outputs will include publication of a photo essay, a photo book, exhibitions and possibly a video. I will work with and make my output available to aid agencies.
