Join us in our mission to increase equality of opportunity across the dance sector! This new Development Fund will allow us to greatly expand our programming for the benefit of our members and our regional dance community.

About the North East Dance Co-operative

We are independent, non-profit and volunteer-driven. Our values are cooperation, collaboration and community.

Our mission is to provide an alternative to top-down programming and increase equality of opportunity across the dance sector, starting with the North East. Day-to-day this translates as the removal of barriers to dance, and the increase of direct community involvement in the creation and provision of dance opportunities.

NEDC Membership

The North East Dance Co-operative is for everyone who is or wants to be involved in dance across the whole of the North East, including dance enthusiasts, community dancers, dance students, teachers and practitioners, professional dancers, artistic directors and all other industry professionals.

NEDC membership is free and open to everyone in our dance community. Everyone in our membership is invited to help shape the NEDC by making their own suggestions for future projects, events and opportunities — and in this way, we are truly a member-led organisation.

Programming & Collaborations

We work together to provide dance education, training and engagement opportunities as requested by our members and in support of our regional dance community. Since our inception, this has included dance classes, workshops and company class observations with various dance companies, for whom we also provide audience development support in return.

We have previously collaborated with Scottish Ballet, Ballet Cymru, Russian State Ballet & Opera House, Amande Concerts, The Kala Chethena Kathakali Company, National Dance Company Wales, Old Kent Road, Phoenix Dance Theatre, New Adventures, London Contemporary Dance School & Edge, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Dance Consortium, Avant Garde Dance, Northern Ballet, Casson & Friends, Eliot Smith Dance, Ballet Black, Russian State Ballet of Siberia, Raymond Gubbay, Ballet Theatre UK and the Mark Morris Dance Group as well as a number of North East theatres, industry professionals and local dance providers.

Looking to the future we have lots of exciting plans for new educational opportunities and engagement activities!

The Development Fund

The model for North East Dance Co-operative has been designed so as to ensure that we are ultimately self-sufficient. We believe this is of paramount importance to secure the longevity of the organisation — particularly in light of the ever-reducing arts funding that is available — but we also fundamentally believe in the importance of our members investing in themselves and each other.

This said, we presently require a cash injection in order to gain some momentum during this critical period of early expansion and bring us to the point where we are not only truly self-reliant but are also meeting the needs of our ever-growing membership.

The Development Fund will:

  • Remove the element of financial risk and allow us to drastically increase the opportunities and services we are able to provide and reach a much larger and more diverse audience.
  • Mean we can greatly expand our programming, including being able to invite internationally acclaimed dance artists, master teachers and other industry professionals to deliver workshops, talks and masterclasses; collaborate with local and touring dance companies to offer you more engagement activities and educational opportunities (e.g. workshops, backstage tours, ‘meet the dancers’); in addition to delivering and co-hosting intensives, short courses and CPD opportunities.
  • Enable us to take more creative risks and create events that represent greater cultural diversity, and with that, attract a larger and more diverse membership.

With your support, we can make 2019 a real milestone year for the North East Dance Co-operative and set the stage for our future contribution to dance and our community.

We thank you for your generous support!

Your donation, whatever the size, will help make a real tangible difference to what the North East Dance Co-operative can do and the number of people we can serve, and we thank each and every one of you — NEDC members and friends — for your kind support.

Whether or not you are in a position to donate to the Development Fund, do please help us reach new dancers and dance enthusiasts who would like to get involved — for the more of us there are, the more we can achieve. You can help by liking us on Facebook, sharing our posts, following on Twitter and Instagram, and most crucially, by telling all your dance friends and contacts about us!
