We were established in 1880 to provide summer lawn bowling facilities for the people of Nairn and district and will celebrate our 140th Anniversary in 2020. Over the years we have developed to be much more than a Bowling Club and have become an important local year-round community resource and focal point for our members and the community. We provide our senior members with a community and social hub, keeping them active and involved with club and community group activities. This is critical for their physical and mental wellbeing. We also provide our facilities to other community groups (whist club, bridge club, speakers club, yoga etc.,) through the winter months. Our focus is social inclusion and reducing isolation by providing a well maintained, friendly and welcoming facility for all ages, genders and abilities.
Over the past 3 years we have doubled our membership to just over 100. This increased membership has also led to an increased number of events being played at the green. This, in turn, has increased the number of spectators that we are accommodating. In Scotland, the weather can be very changeable, and we can get all seasons on the same day which is not ideal for our spectators. At present the spectators and visitors don’t have any covered viewing areas around the green. By providing covered spectator areas, we will encourage even more of the community to come to watch (and potentially join the club) the various games and competitions. This will further enhance our focus of bringing people together, increasing social inclusion and improving physical and mental wellbeing.
Lawn Bowls is an intergenerational sport , but is also a very popular sport and leisure activity for our senior citizens. It is one of the few sporting activities that can be played by an 70+ age group. This makes it very special to this community group. Recently we hosted several residents from a nearby care home to sit by the green and watch the afternoon play. Their carers were amazed at how watching a game, that they had played in their past, brought back some real enthusiasm and excitement. We believe that our bowling facility could enhance the lives of many of these care home residents in the local area. The covered viewing areas will ensure that we provide appropriate facilities for all that want to come along and watch.
Our Trustees have worked tirelessly over the past few years to ensure the club stays relevant to the current times and to the community it serves. We are a growing club in a time when most sports clubs are struggling to attract new members. This has recently been recognised by Bowls Scotland with the award of their BowlsMark accreditation. BowlsMark is Bowls Scotland's Club Accreditation Scheme designed to support clubs to develop and grow. Nairn Bowling Club is the 1st club in Scotland to achieve this award. With this achievement and the growing community support, it is vital that we continue to develop and evolve to maintain our momentum going forward. We are therefore continually looking for feedback from our members and visitors on how we can improve and further enhance what we currently offer. The requirement for covered spectator areas has developed from various observations, comments and feedback from the trustees, members, Bowls Scotland, Northern Counties Bowling Association and the Nairn community.
Please provide your support to help us transform the facilities with much needed covered spectator/visitor seating.
