New stretch target

Purchase specialist equipment for training the young people to set up and market small businesses.

Who are My Yard?

My Yard is based in South Harrow.   There are three main strands to our work: reducing food poverty, reducing social isolation, increasing wider community engagement.

As well as providing a supportive and open environment, My Yard has set up breakfast, lunch and supper clubs to help alleviate food poverty, they provide fun and accessible activities such as street dance sessions.

Rather than multiple and ever changing ‘drop in’ services, My Yard provide a regular, reliable point of contact and build personal relationships with the families living in the area, establishing a physical presence on the estate where none existed previously.

The problem

17% of children in the borough of Harrow are living in families which face income deprivation and 8 areas in Harrow are in the bottom 20% nationally for deprivation affecting children. There has been an increase in knife crime and there is an upward trend in serious youth violence issues. The lack of aspiration and little or no engagement with activities has led to the risk of them being drawn into criminal activity.

The solution

My Yard provides compassionate, practical support to children and young people to help build their resilience, so they are able to tap into the resources and activities help them.

My Yard not only provides food but encourages social and community integration and supporting isolated communities. Utilising food to bring communities together, build confidence, reduce social isolation and work alongside families to embed tailored local support and activities that will improve physical and mental health, and improve training/employment activities.

My Yard gives children and young people a chance to engage, gain confidence and learn new skills.

Who do we help?

On the estate we work on, P is a 17 year old boy, he finds life hard, he didn't like school, left with no qualifications, has an undiagnosed learning disability, has been moved from home to home due to unstable housing, he's made bad decisions, got into trouble with the police. He has no support network, has very little family help, no budget to travel or dress smartly for a job interview, no confidence, no family or social network.

This is the reality for many of the people that My Yard helps. My Yard provide a support network that many other people take for granted.

The results

'Just wanted to say thank you again for all the food and especially for the cleaning and laundry products!! Wasn't expecting all that but was definitely very much needed so thank you so much from me and my kids."

"If only there were more people like you in this world"

"I’ve struggled so much to get fresh food for the week... we’ve been living well below the breadline since August and what you may think is a small gesture is simply enormous to us. Thanks again!"

How will we spend the money?

With this new funding My Yard will be able to provide:

- A ‘pay as you can’ food club for families (fuelled by surplus food)

- Drop in music and Street dance classes

- Arts & Crafts activities for younger children

- Voluntary opportunities & drop in sessions
