I'm Claire and I run My Place Play Cafe with the awesome team there. I'm now a mummy but previously ran an adventure playground (with some of the same staff!). Most of us are qualified playworkers, youth workers, foster carers and parents.
When I became a parent I realised how isolating it can be, even if you are lucky enough to have found some great friends. Exhaustion, feedings, naps and poonami's can sometimes make leaving the house feel like an impossible task.
My Place is obviously a place for children to have fun but we are unique in that we also want to provide a relaxing space for parents and carers to recharge. Our staffed role play area is in full view of the open-plan sofas where the parents/carers can finish a hot drink and maybe even a conversation. We even strategically placed the sofas in L-shapes so that even when someone come alone they will find themselves chatting with others.
I found when taking my son out and about soft-play can be great but expensive and you have to follow them around up and down ladders and slides etc. Nowhere actually had staff there to give parents/carers a precious few minutes downtime and a much needed mental health recharge.
That's how My Place came to be - but now we need more room! We have found a larger unit (still in the same complex) where we can fit our own toilet and a larger kitchen. We would then be able to provide some tasty meals. Any money we raise will go towards the fitout of the new unit.
