Help us go to India and bring creativity and joy to children in Leh!
"In KINSHIP philosophy, the welfare of the child is paramount. In our experience, children express greatest enjoyment and feel able to explore their environment most happily when given licence to engage playfully and creatively through a wide range of media. We believe that having the freedom to explore playfully is essential to emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing." Kinship
Hi everyone, my name is Beatrice and I am a student at the Royal Academy of Music in London. I love teaching children and had several years of private teaching experience before co-founding the Phoenix Music Academy with friend and fellow pianist Hannah-Elizabeth
I was delighted when KINSHIP gave me the chance to travel with Hannah to Leh, a city in the Himalayas in India, spending 3 weeks in August exploring music with the local children. We will be teaching them how to make and play simple instruments, organising music-based group activities including singing and clapping, and encouraging them to develop new ways of channelling their creativity and communicating through sound. We will base our course around the theme "Leh's carnival of the animals" and on top of playing music we will also write poems, dance and build masks for an all-around creativity experience! At the end of our stay, there will be an outdoor community concert, where participating children will offer their musical presentation of the carnival of the animals alongside us and native musicians performing traditional Ladakhi music.
Being able to express creativity is so important for children, it makes them excited and happy but also encourages them to think in new ways and explore their surroundings with a new view. In previous projects this has been proven to be such a great way for children to open up, get more self esteem, find new ways of communicating etc... .
You can find more info about KINSHIP and lots more pictures of previous courses here on their website: http://www.kinship.org.uk/
I have bought lots of instruments such as recorders, percussion instruments and ukuleles already to bring with me and leave with the children. Food and board will be provided for me in Leh, but I need to raise £800 for airfare, visa and travel insurance to be able to participate in this project. Please support me and help spread cultural and musical exchange to make children happy!
