“The pandemic has turned the lives of millions of children and young people upside down. Many young people are finding it hard to cope with isolation, a loss of routine, anxiety about the future, a disruption to their education, and in some cases difficult or traumatic experiences at home.” - Emma Thomas, Chief Executive of YoungMinds

As of September 2020, Relationships and Health Education will be compulsory in all primary and secondary schools in England. We have put together a series of weekly relationship and wellbeing resources for schools and parents to start safe conversations about mental health, social wellbeing and the far-reaching effects of Covid-19 with KS2 & KS3.

Written by award-winning playwright, James Baldwin, ‘Mum, What Just Happened?’ has been created from real life conversations and diary entries of key worker adults on the front line of the Covid-19 emergency.

This 10-part series will include episodes focusing on the themes of modern families, relationships, bereavement, health, criminality, stereotypes, racism, religion, class and diversity.

“These subjects represent a huge opportunity to help our children and young people develop. The knowledge and attributes gained will support their own, and others’, wellbeing and attainment and help young people to become successful and happy adults who make a meaningful contribution to society.” - Department for Education

The programme is designed to create safe and controlled environments for thinking, discussion and debate around issues that young people are likely to face. You can listen to the pilot episode here and there are sample resources below to start a conversation in your classroom or home.

“The script is inspiring and there are so many resources from which to choose so I can select what is relevant each week based on the evolving discussions.” - Academy Principal and Year 6 Teacher, St Peter’s Catholic Primary School

“Wow, what a great resource. It is extremely powerful and thought provoking. It is easy to listen to and we don’t use audio enough as a resource in school, so it definitely would spark interest from older children.” - Academy Principal, St Edwards Primary School

Your full Mum, What Just Happened? resources include a tailored online portal created for your school, 10 episodes of Mum, What Just Happened? with scripts and suggested activities inspired by each scene, including a discussion, art, research, drama and written task on each week's theme. These resources have been created to be used alongside your weekly episode of Mum, What Just Happened? This could be part of your RSHE lesson or can be integrated into wider areas of the curriculum.

James Baldwin’s radio plays have won several Koestler Awards and he is the recipient of an Ideastap Innovators Award, The Lilian Baylis Award for Theatrical Excellence and was a 2019 Barbican Award finalist. James works across the UK creating learning programmes using trauma-informed practice with children who have been deemed vulnerable; this work helped win a Young People Now Award in 2019.
