At short notice, I have just been awarded an amazing two week residency, this coming August sailing around the Outer Hebrides, with An Lanntair, Stornoway and Sail Britain http://www.sailbritain.org. This opportunity will contribute very fortuitously to a wider ACE funded research project into the voyages of Captain Cook, working with The Box, Plymouth and The Captain Cook Memorial Museum Whitby.

Having spent a considerable amount of time researching and creating work around maritime history in the last few years, the irony is that I personally have very little sailing experience so The Muir is Tir residency really is a fabulous opportunity to immerse myself in research, experiencing life at sea at first hand (and probably getting sea sick into the bargain!) , and reimagining  Cook’s arrival at remote and exotic locations. It will represent a unique opportunity to experiment with new prototypes. Meeting with local islanders will provide the inspiration to develop a whole new strand of work as a result of the experience, including a series of staged photographs, (engaging the crew and island residents) staged out at sea  and along foreshores of the remote islands of the Outer Hebrides. Work resulting from this residency will be shown at group exhibitions at An Lanntair arts centre, Stornaway http://lanntair.com and potentially in other venues. You will be able to follow my progress with the residency through my instagram page https://www.instagram.com/neogeographies/

Why am I asking for your money?

I am looking to raise money for the production of artworks for the exhibition resulting from the residency, support with a series of creative outreach workshops with refugees in Plymouth (proposed for autumn 2018) and  also for associated travel costs. You will be contributing to a project which will enable me to make to work around the valuable collaboration between a diverse range of communities and that to ensure that there is a lasting legacy.

The residency is not funded, and I have thus met these costs from my own limited funds. There are very considerable further costs incurred in travel and the production of work for exhibitions resulting from the residency. I also hope to use monies raised to fund other community outreach workshops with refugee groups as part of the project.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to develop and showcase practical skills,  grow in confidence and make friends. They will build networks in the local creative community,  and have opportunities for further professional development. Through their participation in the project, participants will have a voice, both individually and collectively and a platform through which to express themselves.

Any additional funds raised will be channelled in to  costs of prototyping and making new works resulting from the residency at An Lanntair, Stornoway and  will further support  creative opportunities with refugee groups in Plymouth  with Integr8UK   https://integr8uk.org. These workshops are as yet unfunded.

The more money I raise the more ambitious I can be in the production of the work and with developing  the community engagement aspect of the project . This in turn will raise the raise the profile and reach of the project.  I am not looking to make a profit here but to rather to provoke discussion and reflection around the legacy of Cook's voyages  through my work.

I am in receipt of no public funding for this residency.
