These are the girls who are neither seriously disruptive nor academically gifted so they tend to get lost in the noise & either hide in the corner or look for validation in all the wrong places. The one thing they all share is a propensity to seriously underperform. In essence, this structured mentoring programme is all about empowering girls to find their voice, be more visible, take risks & believe in their potential. Once this shift in mindset takes place girls make better life choices & have the self-assurance to step out of limiting life models and social constructs.
To date as a result of the Big Sister programme the confidence improvement in girls is 100%. We see around 50% improvement in attendance; 90% of girls on target to achieve 3 levels of improvement with regard to attainment; no pregnancies, no anti-social behaviour; and over 90% of girls setting their sights on further education or some form of vocational training. We all need someone to believe in us; to see us, to hear us & to know that what we say matters. This is called validation & without it, we fade. Big Sisters play a key role in their mentee’s life. They show up, they listen, they inspire & for many of them they are the only adult in their Little Sister’s life with no agenda & an element of objectivity. Girls tell us all the time how instrumental this relationship is to them. ‘My Big Sister is awesome. She reminds me who I am & how good I am & I would not be as confident as I am today without her guidance’ Jasmine, age 14
We would like to fund more Big Sisters and get involved with more schools to a have a positive impact on more and more of today's struggling teenage girls.
