About Mossley Light Festival (MLF)
Mossley Light Festival 2017 builds on its first annual 'people powered' spectacular, illuminated winter-time carnival in 2016. MLF is created by members of the community who take part in a series of workshops to produce high quality unique work to share in the street carnival parade. We enable new and exciting artistic collaborations and use proven carnival methods of working together, sharing and learning skills. We are asking for pledges to make this year's event be bigger and better than last year!
We offer weeks of open community workshops, masterclasses and event training which culminates in a night-time illuminated carnival parade. The event transforms the town by bringing people together in the workshops and out of their houses at the darkest time of year to celebrate everything that unites us. Your donation will go towards the cost of community workshops in making structures, music and dance to allow as many people as possible to learn new skills and be part of this truly magical event.
In November 2016 an amazing cross-section of Mossley, Tameside worked together to create the first MLF which included a visual arts exhibition in two local railway stations and created a beautiful street carnival. The winter-time carnival told the story of Mossley's industrial heritage through giant puppets, parade bands and dancers, all illiminated using environmentally friendly technology. According to a life-long resident, the event 'was the best thing that's happened in Mossley', setting us a high standard to live up to for this year! Over 500 Mossley residents were in the parade displaying their work and bringing sheer joy to the 3000+ members of our community that came to watch. It was a night of wonder for young children, nostalgia for older people and a memorable event for everyone. It is the largest free event in Mossley and a rare opportunity for everyone to create and enjoy high quality art in a public setting.
Who is it for?
“Everyone was together, all ages, for a moment it felt a different place on the planet!”, Participant.
In 2017 we want to offer community workshops to as many people in the town as possible but at least 150 families and at least 10 community groups. We also want to build giant puppets, put together a parade band and a troupe of dancers from the town. To help the festival continue each year we will develop local skills and confidence through professionally-led workshops and top quality events and volunteer training for those who want to learn and take the vision forward. We believe that high quality cultural events are a vital part of community life and the glue that holds communities together. In current times we need to develop resilience against funding cuts and so by building skills within the community we are investing in the town and its future as well as this spectacular event.
“The great art has inspired my children" , Participant.
Mossley Light Festival 2017 is driven by the fantastic response to last year. In 2016, 40% of the town were involved and feedback was amazing, with hundreds of people asking for it to happen again; people really enjoyed being part of something that unites, builds connections and inspires.
You can help make this happen again, any amount you can spare is very appreciated. Your donation will go towards supporting community workshops so that no-one is excluded because of finances. Your donation is also a symbol of support for positive community action which is very much needed in current times.
Please be a community champion, pledge now and help make great things happen in Mossley, Tameside.
Thanks for your time & support, you're a shining light!
