This year we started our first Gardening Club at our primary school, Mossford Green Primary School in the London Borough of Redbridge. The response to places was overwhelming, with over half of the school applying for only 9 places. Why so few places? Well, we only have 9 gardening tools and sets of gloves and no money to buy any more. So far, some of the children who do attend our club have donated a small amount of money which enabled us to buy a bag of bulbs and some ingredients to make wild bird seed feeders. Otherwise, we do lots of weeding and digging of our currently empty raised beds. As staff, we also buy/ beg borrow and steal (as the saying goes) any resources that we can. We have a lovely wildlife garden which has been neglected and hasn't been used in over 3 years and the children are dying to get in there. Our children love their fruit snacks and it would be great for them to go out and pick their own and really see where it comes from. 3 staff and 9 children are currently working on making this area a place that the whole school can enjoy. We hope that we can also open our garden to the wider community and enjoy many "abundance" and apple pressing days in the near future. Just the minimum amount for 5 fruit trees would be enough to get us going. All we are asking for is £70 to get us started. If you can help, you would be helping to make our school an even more wonderful place to be.
