Musical Mill Mead
We did it
On 9th March 2020 we successfully raised £1,370 with 40 supporters in 111 days

We want to grow music in our school, to positively impact our children, families, our neighbouring care home and partner school in Africa.

New stretch target

Fund regular teaching for more classes.

Why are we doing this?

With government cuts, arts subjects are often the first to go, but we view music as a luxury we cannot do without!

Mill Mead School is currently unable to fund whole class music tuition and is in need of new instruments.

A £10 donation will buy a recorder, £15 an African drumming lesson for 30 children, £20 a ukulele. The instruments will be enjoyed countless times by the whole school community for years to come.

Evidence suggests music can be beneficial to both overall academic performance and wellbeing. We want every child to be able to access great music.

Music brings people together!

As a school at the very heart of the community, this project has the power to build on one of Mill Mead’s biggest strengths: relationships. This project aims to strengthen the bond between the children, families, our neighbouring care home and help us learn more about the musical culture in our partner school in Nabalongo, Africa. We know that music enhances empathy and cultural cohesion and with advances in technology a joint performance with Africa may even be a possibility!

What would we like to do?

FOMMS (Friends of Millmead School / PTA equivalent) would like to raise money to teach African drumming and to buy recorders and ukuleles to launch Musical Mill Mead. We would like to offer lessons for children, intergenerational family workshops at our neighbouring care home (building on the strong link built through our successful community gardening days) and interact musically with our partner school in Africa.

Why should this project be funded?

Music positively impacts the wellbeing of children and adults, exposes us to other cultures, has important implications for healthy ageing and brings communities together.

Thank you for engaging in our project!
