About the memorial event
Mike Oliver died in March 2019. This is a great loss to the Disabled People’s movement. His social model analysis of Disabled People’s oppression had a profound effect on thousands of Disabled People, both in the UK and across the world, and has had a major impact on advancing the fight for full inclusion.
We will be honouring Mike in the form of mini-lectures, photographs and a number of heartfelt personal speeches. Confirmed speakers at the event include Baroness Jane Campbell, Colin Barnes, Len Barton and Michele Moore. To round it off we’re planning some entertainment that we are sure Mike would have heartily approved of.
What the money will be used for
The event is planned for early October 2019, in Canterbury. The University of Kent have kindly given us the use of a fully accessible venue for the occasion, but we need funds to cover catering, BSL interpreters, entertainment, travel and access costs, and other expenses. We have so far raised £2,000 towards the costs but we need another £1,800 to meet all the costs and make this event happen.
Please pledge any amount you can - large or small. The first 50 people donating a minimum of £50 will be guaranteed a place at the event.
Who we are
The event is being organised by Baroness Jane Campbell DBE, Frances Hasler and Gerry Zarb. We were all very close friends of Mikes and had worked with him on various activities over many years going back to the 1980s.
