Mighty Oaks will be a chance for children to connect with nature, learning, playing in a natural environment to build resilience, well-being

by Sharon Doherty in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

St Columbs Park House has been delivering creative and innovative peace building projects for over 27 years.  Whilst there continues to be a need to build peace in our community we are seeing a definite shift in HOW we do this work.  The vision & values of the organisation  consist of three core pillars People Care, Earth Care and Fair Share.  The organisations mission statement is 'to provide sanctuary and support for local citizens to become changemakers, peacebuilders and community leaders.'

The Mighty Oaks Camp will be a chance for children and young people to connect with nature and learn and play in a natural environment; building their resilience, wellness, and a sense of connection after a year of disconnect and uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now more than ever it is crucial that children and young people spend time outdoors, growing a love for their natural environment, a place that provides an abundance of play and learning opportunities.

Evidence shows that human beings, and especially children are spending less time outdoors than ever before and this can have a negative impact on health and happiness. Known as Nature Deficit Disorder, evidence suggests that it contributes to a diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties, conditions of obesity, and higher rates of emotional and physical illnesses. Research also suggests that the nature-deficit weakens ecological literacy and stewardship of the natural world.

To reverse the impacts of Nature Deficit disorder, we can provide immersive nature-centred experiences for children and young people that cultivate curiosity, discovery, and guardianship.

The funding for this project will be spent on the delivery of these nature based learning experiences. It will help children to re-wild themselves, for families to see the park as more than just a place to play on the swings and for us to be able to give some care back to nature.
