I am currently in the very early stages of exploring setting up a charity to provide a mental health service for men and boys but this will take time. I feel that there is an urgent need just now so I've embarked on crowdfunding to run a pilot project. The project will allow me to evaluate the need for mental health support for males in the Garnock Valley. For a variety of reasons, men may be less likely than women to recognise distress in themselves emotionally or psychologically and so less likely than women to seek treatment. Because of this there is no accurate statistical data on the number of men suffering from mental illness but it has been reported that the biggest killer in men under the age of 50 years is suicide. I have a COSCA qualification in Counselling achieved at the Glasgow Caledonian University and worked as a volunteer counsellor with ChildLine for a number of years. I have always been an advocate of talking therapies (amongst other self-help therapies) to help people cope with their feelings, problem solve and change behaviour patterns. I fully understand how difficult it can be to take the first steps toward seeking help, and especially so for males. The demand for counselling is so high that the waiting lists for access to a counsellor can be months. With this in mind, and to fill the gap while on the waiting list or if they are wanting to take the first steps in seeking help, I have secured comfortable rented accommodation in the Garnock Valley which will give men and young males a safe space to talk to others in a self-help group setting. I am also looking to employ the services of a male counsellor who will be able to support some of those who wish counselling in complete confidence in an empathic and non-judgemental way. I have such a commitment for this type of service to be available, that in order to keep costs down, I will be volunteering my time for this project. The initial proposed project will run one night per week (3hrs) over 12 weeks and the funds raised will be used solely for accommodation rental and a counsellor's fees. I'm hoping to meet the target but if not I will utilise any donations for a scaled down project. If I'm lucky enough to exceed the target I will use the surplus funding to extend the project. Thank you for taking the time to read my aspirations founded on my commitment and passion to in some way reverse this current trend in our society.
