Our school thrives on caring and bringing up children in a safe and inspiring place. The emotional wellbeing of children is just as important as their physical health. Good mental health allows children and young people to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-rounded, healthy adults.
Mental health issues are on the rise for primary school children. In a classroom of 30 children, 3 will have been diagnosed with a mental problem. 75% of mental illnesses start before a child reaches their 18th birthday, while 50% of mental health problems in adult life (excluding dementia) take root before the age of 15.
We need to protect the vulnerable members of our society. We need support and give young children support and well-being. This way they can grow up into the world better prepared for the increasing pressures that are around us. Giving primary school children the tools and methods to deal with stress will better prepare themselves for secondary school and adult life.
We are an inner city London school. We would love to offer a serene place where children can take a break from the pressures of their worlds. We have a perfect little place on our roof floor. It is away from the classrooms with plenty of natural light.
We'd like to develop a small room into an informal area for children to relax. In this area we will develop a learning & listening area for a one to one with the teacher and child. The other area will be a breakout area to unwind and realign their thoughts to reenter the world again.
Outside the room, we will put all-weather purpose beanbags and seating area for children for a small social area to develop friendships and social interaction among young children outside the classroom and playground.
We have a team of parents lined up to paint and decorate, and the space available. All we now need is the materials. We need the tables, chairs, white board, sofas, shelves, soft lighting, indoor plants, paints and a rug for inside. Outside we need beanbags, garden furniture, outdoor plants and a wall divider.
Thank you for your time and interest in reading this. Please help us to provide young children in central London a place to be relax and cope with the outside world.
