What is The Shed?
The Shed is a social hub for for older men (and women!) in Roehampton. The 'Shedders' meet weekly to work on practical projects whilst having a cup of tea and a chat.
Why is it important?
Roehampton is home to one of the largest council estates in the UK and is an area of high socio-economic deprivation. The area is poorly served by public transport and provision for older people is minimal. The Shed has become a vital hub to prevent social isolation of older people (especially men) in this area.
"I am on my own now and I can get quite lonely. I really enjoy coming to the shed every week, I actually look forward to Wednesdays - it's the highlight of my week. I am learning new skills and I feel useful!" AC Roehampton resident
We need your help to do more!
We can only support a limited number of people at the moment due to the capacity of the shed. To support more people we need to extend our hours and open on more days.
If we meet our target we could double our opening hours and therefore increase the number of people we can engage with.
If we exceed our target we can really grow!
If we reach our 'stretch' target we would, in addition to opening more often, develop an 'outreach' element that would allow us to engage more people in the Shed. At present, we take self-referrals, but we know there are more people in the surrounding deprived local estates who we can help. We also want to develop our sustainability offer and expand our furniture up-cycling by offering mentoring and training for young people as there is little in the way of positive social activities in this area.
The MORE we can raise, the MORE the shed can grow and the MORE people we can support in this deprived area of London!
