Mend Our Mountains extended by a week – here’s why
After a huge last-minute surge in pledges, we have decided to extend the Mend Our Mountains campaign.
It was an incredible weekend. With the end looming, and awareness of the campaign buoyed by several media appearances, our total shot up by £22,000 in just three days!
The combined amount now stands at £94,637, just shy of the overal £100,000 target but still an incredible achievement.
With the momentum this attention has generated we wanted to make sure no-one missed out on being able to pledge so have stretched the deadline to next Monday.
In terms of the campaign breakdown, the overall ‘UK Wide’ Mend Our Mountains page has brought in an incredible £32,665, smashing the original £20,000 target. What’s more, Mend the Lake District, Mend Snowdonia, Mend the Peak District and Mend the Yorkshire Dales have all sailed past their £10,000 target.
Mend the Brecon Beacons, Mend Dartmoor, Mend the North York Moors and Mend Exmoor have been quite as successful. The extra week also gives us an opportunity to bring these totals up and maybe get a few more projects over that line.
We just want to say another huge thank you to everyone who has pledged so far. The response to this campaign shows the depth of affection which many walkers, climbers and outdoor users feel for the environment and their willingness to chip in voluntarily to help maintain it.
Mend Our Mountains will make a difference to the physical landscape, but it has already made its mark in the political landscape too.
This Early Day Motion in parliament, submitted by our link to parliament Greg Mulholland MP, recognises the fantastic response to the campaign and calls for “an investment in infrastructure and support for the UK's most treasured landscapes so future generations can continue to enjoy these areas sustainably.”
Your support so far is a fantastic testament to the generosity of walkers, climbers and outdoor users and their passion for protecting the hills and mountains. But we have also highlighted the pressure which many national parks and public bodies are under due to cuts and squeezed budgets.
Mend Our Mountains isn’t just about the money – it’s also about raising awareness of the need to look after our landscapes. Your support has made this message so much more powerful. With another week to go, let’s make it even louder!
