On 2nd May 2019 at 1:29 am, my mam Olive died from pneumonia brought on by dementia. She suffered from this disease for around 4 years and when I was not at work, I was her carer.  She lived on her own in the Aged Miners Homes in Horden since my dad died in 2002.  Since she lived on her own, when I was at work, I had to telephone her to ensure that she took her medication and to remind her to cook her lunch for herself which are was still capable of doing - nothing too elaborate mainly crispy chicken and waffles. She never complained about her condition but did get upset at times when she couldn't remember certain things.  In 2018, she was admitted into hospital with her first dose of pneumonia which she really struggled to overcome but overcome it she did - my mam was always a fighter - ever since I was little.  But when I noticed the same symptoms and she was admitted back into hospital, it was a battle she couldn't win a second time. For 6 hours I stayed with her, watching her fighting a losing battle, hanging on as long as she could until she could fight no more.  There's not a day goes by, that I don't think of my mam and dad and that hurt that I felt when she left is still with me every day.  I would like to carry out an Alzheimer's walk in her memory to raise money to help fight this awful disease.
