Me to We Youth Volunteer Trips: Amazon 2016

Weʼre raising £700 to send 15 year old Holly to Ecuador, building safe classrooms to bring education to the poorest communities there.

We did it!

On 10th May 2016 we successfully raised £520 with 2 supporters in 56 days

'Together WE Change the World'

That was what I was told at WE Day UK 2015, an event in which over 10,000 chosen youth volunteers from across the UK celebrate the small but positive changes we can make in the world. We danced to amazing performances by the likes of Years & Year, and heard from inspirational speakers such as Spencer West and Kweku Mandela I volunteer leading younger scouting members, fandraising money for Free the Children's projects overseas.

It was this campaign for change that inspired me to become one of Free the Children's youth volunteers abroad, helping to make all of their work possible.

Hi, my name is Holly and I'm 15 years old. This summer, I will travel to the Amazon with other hand-picked youth volunteers to build safe classrooms for Ecuador's poorest communities. The classrooms will be equipped with a soundproof roof to prevent loud rainfall disrupting learning. Access to education in the Amazon is limited, and the few existing classrooms are dilapidated and flood frequently. Access to clean drinking water is also challenging. Water from the rivers and flood is polluted, making villagers vulnerable to waterborne diseases. I will build clean water systems and hand-washing stations.

The total cost of the trip is £2700. Some of this pays for my ticket, but a greater proportion goes towards the materials needed for the projects, as well as the beginnings of teachers wages and textbooks for the schools. Through my own fundraising efforts, my crowdfunding target has been reduced to just £700! I am currently studying for my GCSE exams, so any assisstance would be appreciated more than you can imagine. The video will give you a little bit more of an idea about what the trip is, but for more information click here.

You're not only helping me have the experience of a lifetime, but also laying the foundations for a future out of poverty, where education is available for all.
