We are a community-based, all-abilities ensemble who formed in March 2020 and this summer will be working within communities around the Mersey River to curate our first physical concerts in a weekend of events around Manchester's Rivers! These events are a coming-together of two landmarks for our group: creating music with our biggest community yet and performing our first ever physical commission.
Help us fund our 1st physical piece!
We have teamed up with landscape charity Groundwork to deliver a community-based weekend of events considering Manchester's blue space and its value in the community. This campaign will fund a composer to work with us and create a new piece for this concert, based on local stories we'll be collecting over the coming months of Manchester's historic and current use of waterways.
The new piece will present local narrative through new music and sound, framing stories in a piece that both belongs to, and is performed by, the community. These stories will be collected during our community work in the coming months, in partnership with Groundwork.
In the lockdown our group turned to creating sound with objects found in our immediate environments, or to exploring sound in new places. We began listening to our surroundings in new ways, appreciating them in new ways through sound. These concerts were borne from the idea that we could share this with a bigger community and this commission will be presented alongside pieces that respond to, imitate, and explore blue space environments, so as to appreciate them in new ways. The lockdowns have led us all to spend more time in our local outdoor spaces, and as we come out of lockdown we want to sustain this in Manchester's communities. Manchester has an abundance of blue space, and we want to celebrate its value and place in our city.
