Umbwi Secondary School needs to complete a girls' dormitory to replace a very run-down off site building, to help girls stay in education.

by Norwich Dedza Partnership in Dedza, Malawi

Umbwi Secondary is a government boarding school in Dedza, Malawi. It needs to complete a dormitory for girls from rural areas to replace a very run-down, off-site building, to help pupils, including those with disabilities, stay safe in education and reduce early marriage.

There is a very urgent need for more educated girls in the Dedza district of Malawi where only around 1 in 100 girls complete the full 4 years of secondary schooling and only 50% of women are literate.

Rural girls are particularly vulnerable to dropping out of school and this can lead to very early marriage, risky childbearing and large families resulting in the cycle of poverty continuing.

The girls at Umbwi need your support! You can help Norwich Dedza Partnership's (NDP) appeal by making a pledge to support this vital work.

NDP has already successfully helped Umbwi school build the first wing of the girls’ hostel and all 240 girls have moved in although 80 are now sleeping 2 to a bed in overcrowded conditions with inadequate sanitary facilities. The need for the second wing is urgent.

Progress on building the second wing of the hostel has been impressive. The walls and roof are finished but a further £21,000 is needed to complete the electrical and plumbing work and provide the girls with bunk beds, lockers, showers and laundry facilities

The impact of completing the second wing will be striking:

  • all 240 girls will have somewhere safe and comfortable to sleep
  • those living with disabilities will have appropriate facilities and
  • the school will increase the number of girls enrolled to 320, creating parity with the boys.

Umbwi school has already raised funds by increasing the fees (something we wish to avoid further), approaching past pupils and selling timber from the site but has no more resources to raise the final funds.

The work has also been generously supported by individuals, UK based trusts and funders including an existing donor who has offered to match all donations from this appeal up to £10,500.

NDP is a registered charity that has been working successfully in partnership with the community in Dedza, Malawi for 15 years – more information is at www.norwich-dedza.org/

Thank you very much for your help from the communities of Dedza and Norfolk.

Here are messages of thanks from some of the girls who have benefitted from the first wing:

“Thank you because of the hostel you have built for us. We had so many problems on the part of sleeping space. Now the problems are completely reduced.”

“I thank about this hostel. You have provided to us good place or shelter.”

“Thank you for the good project you have done by building us a good hostel.”

“I want to thank all about our hostel project because they have provided us a good place to sleep on.”
