At Bridport Youth Dance we pride ourselves in offering young people exciting and innovative dance classes in tap and contemporary dance for 3 through to 21 year olds. We hold up to twenty classes each week as a part of our after school programme. We also hold a summer school - Summer Dance Scene, a specific boys dance programme and have a scholarship scheme offering subsidised classes to children from families on a lower income.
We nurture young talent, as well as encourage and inspire them to unlock their full potential and creativity. Twenty of these students are boys, which is just fantastic. Throughout the year, we work towards our annual dance show (this year Dreams will be performed at the Bridport Electric Palace on March the 3rd and 4th, so please come and see what we do!). These kind of opportunities allows youngsters first hand experience and access to a high quality performance in a professional setting and working with professional artists.
We spend many months rehearsing and ensuring every student is confident and excelling. All this rehearsing requires a space to do this, and fortunately, in November 2015, we moved into Steps Studio (through help from Symondsbury Estate and generous donations from family, friends and students which made this dream happen). This was phase one for us - a hub, a dedicated and unique dance space, somewhere to call home.
Enter phase two - as beautiful as the space is, it isn't quite complete and maintenance is ongoing. We are currently looking to raise money for specific heaters that heat the body, a curtain to run across the back wall to hold in heat, a new stereo system (so all the tappers can be heard!), new dance floor mats with tape and, if enough funds are made, insulate the roof. Our outside area could have extra seating and plants, to encourage students and parents to sit outside when the sun is shining.
All of these things, with the running of the space, is important to us, the children, their parents which spans into the community - please, any donation big or small, is important and valuable.
