Our two Autistic sons aged 3 and 4 suffer from sensory processing disorder, asthma and allergies, with dust, mould and damp exacerbating their asthma symptoms. My youngest son suffers from drop attacks which happen daily and his consultant arranged his protective helmet to prevent injury. As any parent knows children don't always comply and he will frequently take his helmet off and hit his head.
Our kitchen is a hazardous area for our boys, the design causes frequent injuries most often daily. The kitchen has been installed 16 years, with many cabinets damp with signs of mould starting to show. If the kitchen wasn't in the state It was, I would alter the design, however when I attempted to the wood was flaking. The design causes frequent injuries and the dampness causes ongoing symptoms. Our kitchen is equally our boys most favourite room of the house and we have limited space, our boys don't get to spent time playing in their bedroom due to our next door neighbour! Our
Recently I had contacted the local council occupational therapy department and asked for assistance with our kitchen and son's bedroom, our referral was accepted and I was advised we would be accessed within 6 - 8 months. Once accepted they would hope our kitchen could be done within 6 months. It's likely to be at least a year before we could improve our boys symptoms, I did try sourcing private finance however it's not possible due to our existing commitments.
If I can raise £15,000.00 I can strip out our kitchen and replace it, making it safe, damp and mould free. I could also look to make our sons bedroom noise free.
If I can raise £35,000.00 I can extend our kitchen out the back, I have space to extend by 3 metres without requiring planning permission, while still leaving safe, playable space in our garden. An extension would allow us to provide our boys with safe, playable open space. Sound proofing their bedroom would provide our sons with two areas to be as expressive as they want, without our neighbour making life more difficult about noise.
