The consumers in UK are throwing out almost 1 million tonnes of textiles, mainly clothes, shoes and linens EVERY YEAR. How about repairing old and much loved clothes?
Or altering new clothes so they fit perfectly?
Our classes are conducted in libraries which are at risk at being closed unless they bring in new activities. So you're also maintaining a vibrant local community as well as saving the environment.
We've already been successfully running fun and friendly classes, with sewing machines, fabric and expert advice on hand, at two libraries. Everybody is welcome! Trousers have been shortened, dresses made, beautiful blinds constructed from scraps of fabric and even a footstool brought on a wheelbarrow to be upholstered!
The social aspect of the class is enjoyed by all whom attend. It's a wonderful mix of friendly people, including home schooled children who come to learn, retirees looking to meet others and use existing skills and people on benefits who gain a craft for a future job. The sense of achievement in creating, and the connection with others, has also benefited individuals who have felt isolated or depressed prior to taking part in the classes.
Please help us expand into other libraries to enrich communities and bring recycling and reusing into fashion through the teaching of simple skills.
Your contribution will make a difference to the environment and to individual lives. Thank you for your donation and please do come and visit us at Ham Library on Tuesday mornings 10am - 12pm or Teddington Library on a date and time to be confirmed.
