In April 2020, Saint Mary's Church launched it's LoveYourNeighbour Food bank campaign in response to the Covid-19 crisis. Our vision and the aim of this campaign was to reach out to those most in need in the local community to provide emergency food parcels direct to the door. Our objective was to prevent social isolation and food deprivation. We recruited a team of volunteers, led by one of our Curates, and set up a Food bank that delivers weekly food parcels to people unable to leave the house ( self isolating, shielding, disability, financial hardship etc), and therefore unable to directly access the other Foodbanks or supermarkets in the City.
We believe that we have the capacity, capability, and passion to continue delivering food parcels to those that need them the most during the current pandemic, and beyond.
This brand new initiative is aimed at meeting the needs of the most vulnerable and impoverished families in our City, and we hope to continue making a difference by providing both nutrition and social connection each week when we deliver their food parcels.
To ensure that people know about the project we are partnered with several other organisations in Southampton, who are aware of what we are doing and with whom we communicate with every week. They are able to refer people in need directly to the Food bank Referrals Coordinator. Members of the community can also refer themselves for a food parcel via our website - www.saintmaryschurch.org
We are just a team of ordinary people who are passionate about serving and loving others. We are determined to find a way to sustain this vital service on a permanent basis even once the Covid-19 crisis has ended. We are currently working with our partner agencies in the City to shape the future of the Food bank to ensure that it is both meeting the needs of the community and involving them in it.
In the first three months of setting up this project we delivered the equivalent of nearly 30,000 individual meals. The need is still there, in fact new referral sources are being established all the time. We continue to tirelessly fund raise for the Food bank and initially received some donations and funding , but the pot is running low.
We need your help - we need funding to continue this project - we need it to buy food stock - we need it to feed local people - we need it because we want to be able to continue to LoveOurNeighbours!
Thank you for supporting our campaign.
