The extra money will be spent on copies of the book for Doncaster libraries, packaging for the books, as well as refreshments for the launch at Waterstones.

Once-common “nature” words,  from 'acorn' and 'bluebell', to 'starling' and 'wren' were dropped from the Oxford Junior Dictionary almost ten years ago and are in danger of fading away from the children's vocabulary and awareness all together.  'The Lost Words' is a beautiful book created by Robert MacFarlane and Jackie Morris to reclaim and celebrate these words.

Inspired by Jane Beaton's campaign in early 2018, to get a copy of The Lost Words into every primary school in Scotland, we hope to get a copy into every school in Doncaster.

The book takes twenty of the words that have been falling out of use amongst children - such as 'adder', 'kingfisher' and 'bramble', and brings them back to life, through the magical paintings of Jackie Morris and the 'spell poems' of Robert Macfarlane... The Lost Words has been hugely successful as people from around the world find themselves reconnecting with nature.

We would love all primary age children in Doncaster to have the opportunity to discover and share what this book has to offer. The Lost Words is a book to be shared, to delight and inspire children,  the 'spells' and the wonderful illustrations are sure to catch the imagination of all who read it.

Waterstones is offering a special discount for this project which means that each copy will cost us £13 (RRP £20 per copy).  The total cost will be £1,300.  The Rotary Clubs of Doncaster St Leger and Doncaster have committed £250 each which supplemented by a donation of £150, taking funding to the 50% mark.  Anyone preferring to donate directly should send a cheque to the Treasurer, Rotary Club of Doncaster St Leger at 3 Croft Drive, Tickhill, Doncaster DN11 9UL.

An after-hours event at Waterstone’s is planned where a representative from each school could attend with 2 pupils (and parents) to collect their school’s book. Local authors/illustrators/poets will be invited and tickets to the event will be one of the ‘rewards’ for donating.

Please, if you can, support this campaign and give the children of Doncaster a chance to bring these ‘Lost Words’ back to life.
